Underground Transmission Designer

Westwood Professional Services, Inc. is seeking a collaborative, detail-orientated designer to join an exciting consulting firm in the power utility space. The Underground Transmission Designer will be part of our Transmission Engineering Group and operate in a dual role of drafting civil/electrical drawings and engaging in design work for energy infrastructure projects. The position would require the candidate to work with engineers and consultants to create drawings and develop technical understanding of underground transmission design practices and procedures.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Computer aided design and drafting of all engineering products and deliverables.
  • Collaborate with engineers and other drafters to correct discrepancies in drawings and designs.
  • Complete engineering design tasks under the supervision of the engineering staff.
  • Self-checks all work performed to ensure its accuracy prior to turning it over to the supervisor or designee assigned to review the work.
  • Understand & meet project schedule, and quality requirements.
  • Deliver high quality deliverables, ensuring compliance with industry and utility standards.
  • Able to provide innovative solutions and problem solving skills.
  • Detailed and quality oriented.
  • Able to handle multiple projects concurrently and maintain flexibility to changes in work assignments as changes occur in projects.
  • Actively assist in the delivery of a complete project. This may include phone or e-mail, correspondence, attending meetings and other project documents required for project completion.
  • Provide interdepartmental support as required.

Required Skills

  • Associate’s or technical degree in drafting, engineering, or related field of study.
  • 5+ yrs. of CAD experience, AutoCAD and/or Civil 3D experience in electric utility industry, performing underground high voltage transmission or distribution projects.
  • Knowledge of industry standards and general design practices.
  • Excellent Verbal & Written Communications skills.
  • Driven for Results, Decision Quality, Priority Setting, Planning, Conflict Management, Informing, Listening, Dealing with Ambiguity & Customer Focused
  • Ability to invite and accept constructive feedback
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office Products including Excel, Word, and Power Point.
  • Ability to function in a team environment and culture of cooperation and collaboration

Preferred Experience

  • Graduate of AutoCAD program and/or Bachelor’s degree in Engineering technology or related field of study.
  • Experience with design software such as Microstation.
